Eurofighter Typhoon is one of the bidders in the Indian MRCA competition, worth $11 billion, to supply the Indian Air Force with 126 "Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft".

On 27 April 2011
The Ministry of Defense, the Government of India announced that the Eurofighter and French Rafael are only in the Race for MMRCA deal.


Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet is built by British Aerospace, DASA, CASA, and Alenia.

The Eurofighter concept has been conceived since the beginning as a multi-role/swing-role platform that would meet the exacting operational demands of the air forces of Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

The construction of the first Typhoon prototypes began in 1989
A programme milestone was reached in December 1997 when the Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) covering Production and Support was signed by the four defense ministers of Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom at Bonn.

Astra was first shown to the public at Aero India in December 1998.

May 9 to May 12, 2003 –
Astra Missile was successfully tested without control and guidance systems.



11 January 2010 –
Astra Missile Test Failed
India test-fired Astra in the Chandipur-on-sea area, off the Orissa coast however the test wasn't proved successful.

July 7, 2010 –
Astra Test successful
Tests of Astra missile carried out at both night and daytime under inclement weather conditions were successful.



May 21, 2011 –

On Saturday For the second day in a row, India conducted a successful ballistic flight test of indigenously developed Astra - Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile - from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur

Media has reported that Astra missile was test-fired around 1032 hrs and the trial was successful.

Astra is an active radar homing beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), India.

Astra is a high-end tactical missile and is envisaged to intercept enemy aircraft at supersonic speeds in head-on mode at a range of 80 km and in tail-chase mode at 20 km.

The missile is 3.8 metres long and is said to be configured like a longer version of the Super 530D, narrower in front of the wings.

The missile could be launched from different altitudes
It can cover 110 km when launched from an altitude of 15 km,
44 km when fired from an altitude of eight km
And 21 km when the altitude is sea-level.

Astra Missile will be integrated with Indian Air Force's Mirage 2000H, MiG-29, Sea Harrier, Su-30MKI, MiG-21 Bison and HAL Tejas fighter aircraft

Currently DROD has already started to increase the distance of Astra missile

The Mark 2 version of Astra will have a maximum range of 150 km and tail chase range of up to 35 km.

The Astra is intended to have performance characteristics similar to the AA-12 Adder. The Russian-made Adder has a range of 100 km and files at four times the speed of sound.

It’s expected that this year Astra will be inducted into Indian Forces.

Understand how the Astra Missile will work and destroy the enemy Fighter aircraft?

Indian Fighter Plane radar will detect the enemy plane or from ground the Pilot will receive the info regarding enemy plane approaching or crossing Indian Border.

Our Indian Pilot will get this information , quickly the Pilot will start the game plan
Pilot may wait for the plane to come into range of 80 KM.
or he may launch the Astra and using radio link guide the Astra.

when enemy fighter plane will come into range of 80 KM
the Indian Fighter plane pilot will press set the target and press button to launch Astra Missile.

A high-energy propellant quickly boosts the missile to several times the speed of sound.
Astra missile Speed is 4 Mach

If target plane is not in range of 80 Km then Indian fighter pilot will guide the missile and unless and until the enemy plane is in the range of Astra Missile.

Once it’s in the range Astra will take the complete charge, Astra will be ordered to destroy the enemy plane.

As its enemy plane is in the range of Astra will not need guidance from pilot will work independent.

It’s possible that enemy plane will detect the presence of Astra coming to kill him,

And Enemy fighter will start the plane moving up and down and even launch counter missile to destroy Astra in the air.

But Astra got speed of Mach 4 thus Counter attacking missile will need speed more than 4 Mach and Astra can also do the up down and such fighting tricks.
The correct word is maneuvers.

A radio proximity fuse measures the distance to the target and once its in range Astra’s radio proximity fuse detonates its warhead, sending a volley of shrapnel ripping through the enemy fighter.

Astra’s avionics are properly matched with those of the Sukhoi-30MKI.

The fighter should receive the missile’s signals; and the Astra should receive the aircraft’s commands.

Like the US Navy Seals, the Indian Marcos are especially trained to execute covert operations.

Just like American navy seal team six our Marcos information is also kept secret always.


Do you remember the footage where we saw on TV commandos dropping on the Nariman house

Those were the Marcos Commandos the elite force of India.

"MARCOS" is short for "Marine Commandos".
Marine Commando Force (MCF)) that is Marcos is an elite special operations unit of the Indian Navy

Today in world ranking of elite forces in top ten
Indian Marcos got the rank of Seven.
Terrorist called them as the 'Dadiwali Fauj' (Bearded Army) since they are the only non-Sikh personnel allowed to grow beards, 'Jal Murgi' (Water Hens) for the speed, in which they carry out assault from the water and 'Magarmachh' (Crocodiles) for their amphibious capability.

Year 1986 –
Indian Navy decided to start create a special force equivalent to American Navy Seal.
The Indian special force which will conduct raids and counter terrorist operations on sea or on land as per the requirement of operation.

After that Indian Navy selected best officers from navy and they went to America to get the joint training from American Navy Seal then they visited got joint training from British Special Forces also.

When these fully trained officers came back to India then
In year 1987 – Indian Navy created started a special force unit called as Indian Marine Special Force later in year 1991 Indian navy change the name and renamed it as The Marine Commando Force (MCF).
but they are more familiarly known as MARCOS (Marine Commandos).

Training Period –
To become a qualified Marcos, one has to complete 2 years of training.

For one month or 3 to 4 weeks in a first phase they get physical training and tests and only 40 to 50% candidates pass this phase.

After this they get training in weapons and intelligence for nearly 1 year.
After that again they get one year of training.
2 years of training makes them perfect to fight on land or sea or air.
All MARCOS personnel are static line parachute qualified
They are capable of para-dropping into the sea with full combat load and equipment.
They attend the four week high-altitude commando course run by the Parvat Ghatak School in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh.

Marcos normally use H-3 Sea King and Chetak helicopters, Cosmos CE-2F/X100 two-man submarines for operations.

Currently India got more than 2000 Marcos commandos but the information is classified not declared.
2000 Marcos - in 10 groups of 200 personnel each.
Currently there are three main groups detached to the three naval commands;
Mumbai (West), Cochin (South) and Vizag (East).

In Mumbai they get training on INS Abhimanyu.

Operations and Marcos –

Information regarding Marcos operations is kept classified but few times it’s declared.

1988 – Operation Pawan - Pawan means wind
On 21 October 1988, Marcos conducted a successful raid against a coastal LTTE base. The Marcos also helped capture the Jaffna and Trincomalee harbors from the LTTE.

November 1988, Operation Cactus –
A group of 47 mercenaries attempted to escape by sea with 23 hostages, on a hijacked vessel, MV Progress Light later they were spotted and Marcos team fast-roped on the ship from helicopters and took control.

Operation Leech –
which resulting in the slaying of a number of Burmese rebels at Narcondum Island in the North Andaman group of Islands.

Operation Tasha –
a coastal security operation on the Tamil Nadu coast to thwart operations of the LTTE there, than something belonging to the realm of special operations

Operation Swan –
after the December 92 blasts in Mumbai, wherein the MARCOS were used for patrolling.

in the Gulf of Aden, MARCOS thwarted an attempt by pirates to capture the Indian merchant vessel MV Jag Arnav on November 11, 2008

On 13 December 2008 MARCOS units operating from the Indian Naval warship INS Mysore foiled a pirate hijack attempt of Ethiopian vessel MV Gibe off the Somali coast.

Marcos have been active in Jammu and Kashmir as part of the Army's counter-terrorist efforts. Their main task is to control the infiltration of terrorists from across the border into Jammu and Kashmir through the Jhelum river and Wullar, a 65 square kilometer freshwater lake.

During the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26, 2008, lack of information about the layout of the Taj Mahal hotel in Mumbai, one of the key targets of the attacks, had put security forces in a bind.
Having burnt their fingers once, the marcos are now sweating it out during peacetime to be well-versed of the site plans of offshore installations on the eastern coast of the country.

Two Marcos received injuries during "Operation Tornado" launched to flush out terrorists at the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower Hotel.

June 1982 –
Dassault announced it was developing a successor to the Mirage 2000.

On 13 April 1983, France awarded Dassault a contract for two Avion de Combat experimental (ACX) demonstrators later revised down to one.

The resultant Rafale A technology demonstrator was a large-delta winged fighter, with all-moving foreplanes, embodying fly-by-wire (FBW) flight control system.

Rafale the aircraft can operate from 400-metre (1,300 ft) runways.

The Rafale entered into service with French Navy in December 2000, and with the French Air Force in 2004

Rafale B and C entered service with the French Air Force in June 2006
"Rafale C", with C standing for chasseur (fighter)
"Rafale B" , with B standing for biplace, or two-seater.

The RAFALE, a fully “omnirole” fighter, is available in three distinct variants:

1.Single-seat RAFALE C for combat operations from land bases
2.Single-seat RAFALE M for carrier operations
3.Two-seat RAFALE B for combat operations from land bases

These three variants all share a common airframe and a common weapon / mission system, the differences between naval and land versions being mainly limited to the undercarriage and to the arresting hook, at the rear of the fuselage.

The RAFALE features a delta wing with close-coupled canards.

The RAFALE has been cleared to operate with the following weapons:

MICA, air-to-air interception, combat and self-defence BVR missiles (“beyond visual range”), in their IR (heat-seeking) and EM (active radar homing) versions,
AASM stand-off, modular & propelled, air-to-ground precision guided weapons, with inertial/GPS & inertial/GPS/infra-red guidance kits, or with the future inertial/GPS/laser guidance variant.
SCALP long-range stand-off missiles,
EXOCET anti-ship missiles,
Laser-guided bombs,
Conventional air-to-ground ordnance,
An internal gun,
The upcoming METEOR extreme long-range air-to-air missile,
Customer-selected weapons.

The RAFALE's stores management system is Mil-Std-1760 compliant and interoperable. As such, it considerably facilitates the integration of customer-selected weapons.

With its ten tonne empty weight, the RAFALE is fitted with 14 hard points (13 on the RAFALE M).

Five of them are capable of drop tanks and heavy ordnance.

Total external load capacity is more than nine tonnes (20,000 lbs.).

Buddy-buddy refuelling missions can be carried out into portions of the airspace out of reach of dedicated and vulnerable tanker aircraft.

All versions of the RAFALE are fitted with the Nexter 30 M 791 high-power 30-mm gun, capable of firing 2,500 rounds per minute.

With its outstanding load-carrying capability and its state-of-the-art weapon / mission system, the RAFALE can carry out both ground attacks and air-to-air combats and interceptions during the same sortie.

It is also capable of performing multiple functions at the same time, such as “beyond visual range” (BVR) air-to-air firings during the very-low-altitude, terrain-following penetration phase.

This gives the RAFALE impressively broad “omnirole” capabilities, along with an extremely high degree of survivability.

An advanced digital fly-by-wire (FBW) control system controls longitudinal stability. The FBW system is quadruple redundant with three digital channels and one separately designed analog channel. Design independence between channels is pivotal in preventing anomalies simultaneously affecting several channels.

The M88-2 turbofan is a new-generation engine featuring state-of-the-art technologies, including non-polluting combustion chamber, single-crystal turbine blades and powder metallurgy disks, etc. It also features the latest advances in reducing electromagnetic and infrared signatures.

The RBE2 / AESA radar - Active Electronically Scanned Array

The RAFALE is the first operational - and, so far, the only - European combat aircraft to use an electronic scanning radar. Developed by Thales, the RBE2 radar has benefited from a massive research effort and from Thales’ unmatched know-how based on past experience. Compared to radars with conventional antennas, unprecedented levels of situational awareness are attained with earlier detection and tracking of multiple targets.

With its superior beam agility and its enormous computing power, the RBE2 offers outstanding performance that cannot be replicated by mechanical scanning radars.

With the advent of “Tranche 4”, aircraft which are due to enter service from 2013, the RAFALE fighters will be fitted with an active electronic scanning array (AESA) which will provide a wide range of functions:

All-aspect look-down and look-up detection and tracking of multiple air targets for close combat and long-range interception, in all weathers and in jammed environment.

The RBE2 also has ability to track targets in or out of the search domain, the ultimate advantage in air combat.

Real time generation of three-dimensional maps for terrain-following above uncharted terrain in blind conditions. The RAFALE is the sole aircraft to currently propose such a function.

Real time generation of high resolution 2D ground maps for navigation updates and detection, identification and designation of ground targets.



Detection and tracking of multiple naval targets.

In those circumstances when absolute discretion is the most relevant tactical factor, the RAFALE can rely on several other sensor systems:

2 - The Front-Sector Optronics (FSO)

Developed by Thales and Sagem, the Front Sector Optronics (FSO) system is fully integrated into the aircraft. Operating in the optronic wavelengths, it is immune to radar jamming and it provides covert long-range detection and identification, high resolution multi-target angular tracking and laser range-finding for air, sea and ground targets.

With its narrow field, the visible waveband capability is truly valuable to identify targets in situations where visual contact is required by the rules of engagement.

3 - The SPECTRA - internal electronic warfare suite

Jointly developed by Thales and MBDA, the internal SPECTRA electronic warfare system provides the aircraft with the highest survivability asset against the latest airborne and ground threats. The SPECTRA EW system provides a multi-spectral threat warning capability against hostile radars, missiles and lasers.

It is fully integrated into the aircraft, giving it excellent survivability against both air and ground threats.

The SPECTRA system carries out reliable long-range detection, identification and localisation of threats, allowing the pilot to instantly select the most effective defensive measures based on combinations of radar jamming, infrared or radar decoying and evasive manoeuvres.

The angular localisation performance of the SPECTRA sensors makes it possible to accurately locate ground threats to either avoid them, or target them for destruction with precision guided munitions.

With its outstanding localisation capabilities of airborne threats, the SPECTRA suite is a key system used to ameliorate situational awareness.

Instrumental in SPECTRA's performance is a threat library that can be easily defined, integrated and updated on short notice by users in their own country.

4 - The real-time Data-Link

A secure high-rate Data-Link is provided to share data in combined air operations with other friendly assets, i.e. other aircraft in the formation, airborne and surface command and control centres, forward air controllers, etc.

The RAFALE’s interoperability as part of a multinational operation has been demonstrated on countless occasions, and NATO (L16) as well as non-NATO solutions can be provided to meet various customers' requirements.

5 - The DAMOCLES - new generation laser designation pod

The new generation DAMOCLES laser designator pod designed by Thales, brings full day and night laser designation capability to the RAFALE, with metric precision.

The IR sensor of the DAMOCLES pod operates in the mid-wave infrared band, allowing it to retain its effectiveness in warm and / or humid conditions. DAMOCLES is interoperable with all existing laser-guided weapons.

6 - The AREOS - Recce pod - with in real-time transmission

The AREOS reconnaissance pod developed by Thales allows day and night photography at all altitudes, with the capability of instantaneous transmission in flight of the photos to a ground station.

The remarkable overall performance of its sensors for stand-off reconnaissance at extreme ranges means that AREOS can be considered as a pre-strategic asset.

The core of these enhanced capabilities of the RAFALE lies in a new Modular Data Processing Unit (MDPU). It is composed of up to 19 flight line-replaceable modules (LRUs), 18 of them providing each a processing power 50 times higher than that of the fighters of previous generation.

The MDPU, which is composed of commercial-off-the-shelf elements, is the cornerstone of the avionics / weapon upgradeability of the RAFALE.

Sensor data fusion provides a link between the global battlespace surrounding the aircraft and the pilot's brain with its unique ability to grasp the outcome of tactical situations and make sensible decisions.

It hinges on the computing power of the MDPU to process data from the RBE2 AESA radar, the front sector optronic system, the SPECTRA EW system, the IFF, the infrared missile seekers and the Data-Link (L16 or custom).
1- Multi-sensor data fusion

Implementation of the multi-sensor data fusion on the RAFALE translates into accurate, reliable and strong tracks, uncluttered displays, reduced pilot workload, quicker pilot response, and eventually into increased situational awareness.

It is automatically carried out in three steps:

1. Establishing consolidated trackfiles and refining primary information provided by the sensors.

2. Overcoming individual sensor limitations related to wavelength / frequency, field of regard, angular and distance resolution, etc, by sharing track information received from the sensors.

3. Assessing the confidence level of consolidated tracks, suppressing redundant track symbols and decluttering the displays

Following is the timeline of India's $10.4-billion tender for 126 advanced combat aircraft, a proposal originally mooted in 2000:

1.
2000: Indian Air Force (IAF) conveys to defence ministry its interest in acquiring medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA) to replace its ageing fleet of Soviet-era MiG-21s and because of delays in developing the indigenous light combat aircraft (LCA).


2.
2001: IAF issues request for information (RFI) for 126 combat jets.

3.
2003: IAF seeks defence ministry's permission to buy 50 more French Mirage-2000s to shore up the only MMRCAs in its fleet as a stopgap arrangement. The aircraft had been acquired in the mid-1980s.

4.
2004: Defence ministry asks IAF to instead issue a larger MMRCA tender.

5.
2005: Defence ministry issues initial MMRCA tender but withdraws it quickly even as it starts receiving responses from vendors.

6.
2006: The then IAF chief, Air Chief Marshal S.P. Tyagi, flags the dwindling squadron strength of the force. From a sanctioned strength of 39.5 combat squadrons, the IAF is down to 33 squadrons.

7.
August 2007: India issues the tender for 126 MMRCAs at an estimated cost of $10.4 billion (Rs 46,000 crore).

February 2008: US majors Boeing and Lockheed Martin, Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, France's Dassault, European consortium EADS and Sweden's SAAB submit their bids.

9.
April 2009: Rumours afloat that Dassault and SAAB are out of the race.

10.
May 2009: Defence ministry says Dassault and SAAB still in contention.

11.
April 2010: IAF completes its flight and weapons evaluation of the six contenders on the basis of 643 parameters.

12.
December 2010: An offset proposal of contenders goes missing; later found on the roadside in south Delhi. The incident threatened to derail the tendering process.

13.
April 2011: India down-selects EADS and Dassault for the final leg of the contest, rejecting the other four contenders.

The deal is expected to be awarded to either EADS or Dassault by the end of this fiscal March 31, 2012.

Under the terms of purchase, the first 18 aircraft will come in a "fly-away" condition, with the remaining 108 to be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited under a transfer of technology agreement. The size of the contract could eventually go up to 200 aircraft as there is a provision for increasing the order by 50 percent without any price hike.

The contract includes an offsets clause under which the winning vendor will plough back 50 percent ($5 billion) of the deal amount back in India to energise its defence industry.

What is Aero India 2011?

Aero India 2011 is the Asia’s largest air show, Aero India is held at Yelahanka Air Force Station, Bangalore, India from 9-13 February 2011.

Global Manufacturers of war planes will display their best planes to in this air show and will try to impress and win the India’s Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) tender.


This is the first time ever that all six contenders for the contract are participating at an Aero India show —
1. Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet,
2. Lockheed Martin’s F-16 Super Viper (both from USA),
3. MiG Corporation’s MiG-35 (Russian),
4. Dassault’s Rafale (French),
5. EADS’s Euro fighter Typhoon (European Union’s)
6. SAAB’s Grippen (Swedish).

All six participants of a tender to supply 126 light fighter jets to the Indian air force will showcase full flight displays at Aero India 2011 air show to win the $11 billion tender.

The air show is organized by Defence Exhibition Organization and the Ministry of Defence, it is held in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Department of Space and the Union Ministry for Civil Aviation.

In this Air show nearly 675 exhibitors and around 100 types of civilian and military aircraft’s would be on display
Civil and military aerospace manufacturers from 30 countries, including the US, Britain, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Belgium, Brazil, Spain, Ukraine and the Netherlands, will participate in the show.

250 American companies will participate in this show.
The USA is leading the list with 250 companies participating at the show, Germany with 35, Italy with 10 and 9 from Israel.

Russia will be represented by 35 companies, including MiG, Sukhoi, Almaz-Antei and Engineering Design Bureau.
Russia will traditionally promote MiG-35 and Su-35 fighter jets, the Yak-130 combat trainer, two versions of Il-76MD transport plane (with different engines), the Il-78MK aerial tanker and MiG-29K and MiG-29KUB naval fighters.
Russia will exhibit over 80 types of weaponry



Israel Military Industries Ltd. (IMI) will participate in the 8th International Exhibition on Aerospace
During the exhibition, IMI will display
1. DELILAH Ground Launched (GL), loitering guided missile,
2. MPR500, Multi-Purpose Rigid Bomb, same like MK-82 Bomb.
3. IFB500, Improved Fragmentation Bomb
4. SPECTRAL IR FLARES,RED SKY 2, Very Short Range Air Defense System, offered as an upgrade to existing Man Portable Air Defense Systems,
5. Multi-Purpose Rifle System (MPRS) designed to provide infantry troops increased lethality and enhanced target incapacitation capabilities

World class fighters like the F-16 Fighting Falcon, F/A-18 Super Hornet, C-17 Globemaster III, C-130J Hercules (recently procured by India) and KC-135 Stratotanker will be on display

India will display its indigenously built supersonic light combat aircraft and light combat helicopter, which will be on the display for the first time.

IAF’s Surya Kiran aerobatic team and Sarang helicopter display team will display their skills.
The Czech Flying Bulls Aerobatics Team will be performing at the Aero India 2011 with their fleet of four Zlin 50 LXes.
The Flying Bulls’ 17-minute performance will include the box formation and the mirror flight.

The Mirage 2000 is a multirole combat fighter by Dassault Aviation of France.
It was designed as a lightweight fighter based on the Mirage III in 1970s for the French Air Force.

India has acquired a total of 51 Mirages, which include 41 single-seater Mirage 2000Hs and 10 two-seater Mirage 2000TH trainers.



In year 1985 26 single-seaters and 4 two-seaters was shipped to the Indian Air Force
And later remaining batch of fighters arrived

The Indian Air Force named the Mirage 2000 Vajra (Thunderbolt)

As per current negotiations between India and France it has been reported that IAF is going to upgrade old Mirage 2000H to Mirage-2000-5 Mk 2 variant with new radar systems, a new weapon suite, missiles, electronic warfare system etc.

This will increase the life of Mirage 2000 fighters to 20 years.

Mirage 2000-5 Mark 2 which is currently the most advanced variant of the Mirage 2000
The Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 is ideally suited to interception and air superiority missions.
The Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 is entirely suited to high-altitude interception operations at high supersonic speeds (Mach 2.2 at 50,000ft)

Important Features of Mirage 2000-5 Mark 2

RDY 2 radar –
The RDY 2 radar manufactured by the Thales company is a latest-generation look-up / look-down long-range radar. Its ability to switch automatically in the detection, tracking and fire-control modes makes it unrivalled for air-to-air missions.
Leading technical characteristics are as follows:

•In air-defense mission, the RDY 2 multimode radar can simultaneously detect up to 24 targets at all altitudes.

•It can track up to eight targets simultaneously and track four priority targets automatically in both the vertical and horizontal planes. It can evaluate the effects of beyond-visual-range attacks.

•In air-to-surface mission, it is capable to identify accurately fixed or mobile targets, and to designate them to the weapons.

•The RDY 2 radar satisfies the essential requirements of modern aerial combat, including firing against multiple targets. The radar employs three pulse repetition frequencies (PRF), with automatic monitoring frequencies for target detection purposes. The system is effective at all altitudes and ensures early detection, coupled with continuous target tracking of a very high standard.

•The RDY 2 radar is designed to use capabilities in the areas of reconnaissance based on high-resolution images.

•A laser gyro, GPS-coupled, inertial system featuring a high level of reliability, accuracy and a short alignment time (on ground alert, as well as in flight).

•A fully integrated internal countermeasures system capable of detecting, identifying and localising the most dangerous air-to-air and ground-to-air threats with the highest accuracy; this system includes multiple jamming and decoying capabilities. Thanks to interferometric sensors, the localisation accuracy provides the option of designating ground-to-air targets to weapons during a SEAD mission.

•A multifunction data link system.
To assist the pilot in the management of his mission, and to ease reconfigurations, the "Glass Cockpit" technology has been adapted for the Mirage 2000-5 Mk2.
The instrument panel includes 5 displays, among which 3 are color displays. The central screen is mainly dedicated to the tactical situation display. In between this screen and the Head-Up display, another screen -collimated to infinity - displays the main sensor image (radar or laser designation pod). This unique display layout allows the pilot to shift instantly from head-up flying to internal and external monitoring.

Among the other major evolutions of the Mirage 2000-5 Mk2, one can mention:

•A modular avionics concept.

•New larger lateral displays.

•New back-seat colour display repeater.

•Helmet-mounted sight.

•Automatic terrain-following system based on a digital terrain file.

•Digital map on a head-down display.

•An aircraft-to-missile datalink with an increased number of channels.

•A discrete multimode datalink system.

•The new Damocles laser designation pod featuring:
o3-5µm infrared imagery,
oincreased laser range.

•A Flir imager integrated into the Damocles pylon.

•On-board oxygen generation system.

•Combined air-to-air and air-to-ground configurations.

•New multi-channel recording system.

•Increased maximum take off weight (17.5 t).

•Very long range stand-off air-to-ground missiles.

•The introduction of the IR Mica missile.

To date, 5 different air forces have chosen the new-generation Mirage 2000-5 under a program involving almost 200 aircraft.

Kargil war – Operation Vijay

Mirage 2000 proved its necessity and also our Indian air force engineers and pilots proved that when India needs them they will perform in all odd conditions.
IAF used the Mirage 2000 fighters in Kargil war.

Two squadrons, numbers 1 ‘Tigers’ and 7 ‘Battleaxes’, at Gwalior, operate the fleet.

When Kargil war started initially IAF used fighters such as MiG-21, 23 and 27

Then IAF decided to use Mirage 2000 as it can operate at high altitude with no problem, but it had no high altitude attack capability.

Dumb bombs were used to target the enemy and Mig 29 also supported the Mirage 2000 fighters in Kargil war.

Indian army and IAF both worked together and defeated Pakistan in Kargil war.

The commanding officer of 7 Squadron,
Wing Commander Sandeep Chhabra received the Yudh Sena Medal,
as did the commander of 1 Squadron, Wing Commander S. Neelakantan.
Wing Commander R. Nambiar received the Vayu Sena Medal,
as did fellow 7 Squadron pilots, Squadron Leaders M Rao, D.K Patnaik and Flt Lt Tokekar.
The technical officer of 1 Squadron, Squadron Leader K. Ravi, received the Vayu Sena Medal for his work in adapting bombs for use on the Mirage 2000.

Two pilots from 1 Squadron (Sqn Ldr S Jha & Wani) and one from 7 Squadron (Flt Lt M Yadav) received ‘Mentions in Despatches’.

Mirage 2000 flying at high altitudes and perfection of our IAF pilots became the key ingredients to win the Kargil war.
The code name for this war was Operation Vijay which resulted in Indian Vijay.
Vijay means win.

In simple words Propulsion is a method propelling [ movement ] an object forward and maintaining its motion.

Propulsion means to push forward or drive an object forward.
A propulsion system is a machine that produces thrust to push an object forward.
On airplanes, thrust is usually generated through some application of Newton's third law of action and reaction.
A gas, or working fluid, is accelerated by the engine, and the reaction to this acceleration produces a force on the engine.

warhead means - That part of a missile, projectile, torpedo, rocket, or other munition which contains either the nuclear or thermonuclear system, high explosive system, chemical or biological agents, or inert materials intended to inflict damage.

The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is designed to fulfill military and humanitarian airlift

The C-17 is capable of rapid strategic delivery of troops and all types of cargo to main operating bases or directly to forward bases in the deployment area.
The aircraft can perform tactical airlift and airdrop missions



The C-17 Globemaster III is a high-wing, four-engine, T-tailed aircraft with a rear loading ramp.
In 1980, the U.S. Air Force asked for a larger transport that could be refueled in flight and use rough forward fields so that it could fly anywhere in the world.

On Aug. 28, 1981, McDonnell Douglas won the contract with its proposal to build the C-17.
The design met or exceeded all Air Force design specifications, and the huge transport was able to use runways at 19,000 airfields.
The C-17 is built in Long Beach, Calif.

The C-17 made its maiden flight on Sept. 15, 1991, and the first production model was delivered to Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., and June 14, 1993.

The C-17 received the "Globemaster III" name in early 1993.
The first squadron of C-17s, the 17th Airlift Squadron, was declared operationally ready Jan. 17, 1995

The aircraft is operated by a crew of three (pilot, copilot and loadmaster), reducing manpower requirements, risk exposure and long-term operating costs.
Cargo is loaded onto the C-17 through a large aft door that accommodates military vehicles and palletized cargo.

The C-17 can carry virtually all of the Army's air-transportable equipment.

A cockpit crew of two and one loadmaster operates the C-17, which can be refueled in
flight.

The four engines are Pratt & Whitney PW2040 series turbofans, designated as F117-
PW-100 by the Air Force, each producing 40,440 pounds of thrust.

The engines are equipped with directed-flow thrust reversers capable of deployment in flight.

On the Ground, a fully loaded aircraft, using engine reversers, can back up a two-percent slope.

In the cargo compartment the C-17 can carry Army wheeled vehicles in two side-by-side rows.

Three combat ready Stryker infantry-fighting vehicles comprise one deployment load. Similarly, the Army's newest main battle tank, the M-1, can be carried.

The C-17 is operated by the U.S. Air Force, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, NATO and Qatar.

In January 2010, the US Government received a request from India for 10 C-17s through the US Government's Foreign Military Sales program and was approved by US Congress in June 2010.
On 23 June, the Indian Air Force successfully test-landed a USAF C-17 at the Gaggal Airport, India.
This completed the IAF's C-17 trials.
India may well order another six C-17s after the first 10.

When American President Barack Obama visited India this month, all their military, security paraphernalia, including armour-plated cars and helicopters were brought to India on board C 17 Global Master.
For ten C-17 Globemaster-III cost is - $4.1-billion which India will be paying to USA.

Think why in India we can not build such aircrafts?
Learn to ask Politician this when they say we are becoming super power.

These aircrafts are also bought by India without inviting Global Tenders.

As the name goes, yes it is Global Master – Master has no match
C 17 enjoys the status of Master as per my view.

Indian government has agreed to purchase 57 Hawk training jets, Hawk AJTs (advanced jet trainers) from BAE systems England, for Indian air force and Indian Navy .
BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce will supply India with 57 Hawk military training jets in a deal worth around US1.09 billion
BAE will supply 40 trainer jets to the air force and the remainder to the navy.




The deal, worth 500 million sterling for BAE systems and up to 200 million sterling for Rolls-Royce, will boost British defence firms looking to break into the huge Indian defence market mostly controlled by Russian, US and Israeli companies.

The Hawker-Siddeley Hawk is an advanced jet trainer which first flew in 1974 and is produced today as the BAE Hawk.

In 2004, India purchased 66 Hawk Training Jets and this is second order to purchase 57 more Hawk trainers. In 2004, HAL had signed a nearly Rs8, 000 crore contract for 66 Hawk trainers from BAE Systems.

The BAE Hawk Mk 132 serves as an advanced jet trainer in the IAF and is progressively replacing the Kiran Mk.II.
The Hawk 132 would adequately serve as lead in trainer for Su-30 MKI, Mirage 2000 and MiG-29 Advanced aircraft.

Problem with this Hawk - I feel that this Hawk Jet will not be useful to train IAF pilots for the 5th generation war planes, aircrafts.
Again in future we have to purchase new training jets from UK or USA or Europe.

But already we Indians are using this trainer jets, and we started to manufacture this jets in India, government may have agreed to buy these jets.
For how many years these jets will be useful for training.

The Hawk Mk. 132 is the latest export variant of the Hawk and was previously known as the Mk. 115Y.
The Mk. 132 formally entered service with the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 23 February 2008

More than 75 IAF pilots got training at RAF Hawk fleet at RAF Valley and around
100 IAF engineering officers and technicians got training technicians in BAE Systems’ Technical Training Academy at Warton

The first IAF Hawk AJT crashed at 406 Air Force Station Bidar at 12.40PM on April 29, 2008.




The Navy will get 17 of the 57 new Hawks, which will also be manufactured by HAL, for its own aircraft carrier-based fighter training. Towards this, Navy inked Rs 3,042-crore deal with HAL and in 2013 or 2014 navy will start to get delivery.
The air force needs 40 additional trainers, while the navy has sought 17 trainers to train pilots before they fly supersonic fighters such as MiG-21 and Sukhoi 30MkI.


The Hawks already inducted at the Bidar airbase are being used to train rookie IAF pilots on the intricacies of combat fighter jet flying.

The first aircraft was delivered to the Indian Air Force in December 2007.

By June '08, BAE Systems has delivered 12 of the UK-built jets to the Indian Air Force. In addition BAE Systems has delivered 1,500 tonnes of raw material, 3,500 tools and 15 million components for the aircraft that will be built in India.

BAE Systems has delivered the 24th and final UK built Indian Hawk in November 2009
HAL handed over the first locally-built Hawk 132 to the IAF on 14 August 2008.
These aircraft will be powered by Rolls Royce Mk 871 turbo fan engine.

May 23, India joined the few countries who have capability to produce and manufacture advance fighter helicopter or chopper with the successfully test flight of the Light Combat Helicopter (LCH)

Know important facts about LCH -



Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) is a combat helicopter developed in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for use by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army.

In October 2006 Funds for the design and development of the LCH to meet the requirements of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force were sanctioned

The first Technology Demonstrator (TD-1) of the LCH flew the 20 minute flight from HAL's Helicopter Complex, Bangalore on 29th March 2010.
The second flight took place on April 28, 2010
The third test flight of the LCH was successfully made on 23rd May 2010

In future it is possible that Cheetah and Chetak will be replaced with the LCH , if government wants to save the money, and decide not to import the choppers to replace the cheetah and chetak.

The LCH belongs to the 5.5 ton class.

LCH prototype development was based on the concept of design, ground testing and fabrication concurrently. This resulted in building the 1st machine within 40 months.

It’s expected that in year 2012 or 2013 LCH will be inducted in Indian arm forces, Indian Air force.

HAL has a firm order to deliver 65 LCH to the IAF and 114 to the Army

The LCH is a derivative of the HAL Dhruv, which was inducted into the Indian armed forces.

LCH will be fitted with a 20 mm Turret gun and can carry Rockets, Air-to Air / Air-to-Ground missiles on the weapon stations.
Its Shakti engine, jointly developed by HAL and Turbomeca of France, has been optimized for high altitude operations.


The helicopter would have day/night targeting systems for the crew including the Helmet pointed sight and Electro-optical pod consisting of CCD camera/FLIR/Laser range finder/laser designator.

The LRF & LD facilitate measurement of range to the target & guidance to the Laser guided Missiles respectively. A Digital Video Recorder would enable recording of the vital mission for debriefing purposes. The turret gun skewing is controlled by the helmet mounted sight of the gunner.

The LCH is fitted with Self Protection Suite consisting of Radar/Laser Missile warning systems and Countermeasures dispensing system.

The helicopter would be fitted with a Data Link for Network-centric operations facilitating transfer of the mission data to the other airborne platforms and ground stations operating in the Network, thus facilitating force multiplication.

The performance features of the LCH i.e. rate of climb, cruise speed, service ceiling are on par with pache, Kamov 30 or Mi-35.


LCH can hit a target six kilometers away with utmost precision both the ground and in air.

Designed for anti-tank and anti-infantry roles with a maximum speed of 275 kmph (148kt), it will also be capable of high-altitude warfare since its operational ceiling will be 16,000 to 18,000 feet (5,490m).

India faced the Kargil war in 1999 which made Indians aware that Indian needs dedicated fighter helicopter, chopper.

The DRDO is reported to be developing the HELINA missile, a Nag derivative with an extended range of 7 km, to augment the helicopter's air-to-ground capability.

The LCH is currently reported to be 580 kg over its target weight. HAL is struggling to trim the weight in order to keep the aircraft in compliance with the QRs.
“We will find ways of cutting down TD-1 by 180-200 kg; TD-2, which will fly in mid-2010, will be another 100 kg lighter; and TD-3, which will be ready by end-2010, will shave off another 65-75 kg,” Managing Director of HAL’s Helicopter Complex, R Srinivasan, told Business Standard in September.

It is very easy to make land mine, very cheap to make and use land mines.


Normally mines placed in ground by hand but mechanical machines can be also used to bury mines in ground.
Land mines are explosive devices that are designed to explode when triggered by pressure or a tripwire.

Arm forces used the mines to decrease the moving speed of enemy army as well as destroy their tanks.
A land mine can be triggered by pressure, movement, sound, magnetism and vibration.
When mines are laid in group, then it is called as mine fields. There are many types of mines, but most important are
Anti-personnel (AP) mines and Anti-tank (AT) mines
Anti tank mines contains more explosive material than the anti personal mine.
As more explosive material it needs more pressure to explode.
Anti personal mines use the pressure of a person’s foot as a trigger but tripwires are also used.
Modern anti vehicle mines use a magnetic trigger to enable it to a detonate even if tires did not touch it.
Advanced mines are capable to recognize the friendly vehicle and enemy vehicle, thus own army can use that mine field, it will not blast, mines explode only when the enemy vehicle or tank comes into contact.

What is Detonator?
Detonator is a small amount of explosive used to ignite larger amounts of explosive.
Ignite = Good example is our gas stove in kitchen, we use pencil like igniter to start our kitchen stove burner.

What is Magnetic Mine?
Magnetic Mines are equipped with magnets; they get triggered when they come into contact with large number of metal.

Blast Mines –
Mines are buried few inches in ground and are triggered with a pressure of more than five kg, as soon as some one steps on pressure plate mine gets triggered.
Main use – Not to kill but damage when purpose becomes to destroy fully and kill it becomes the anti tank mine.

Once land mines are buried in ground they stay active for more than fifty years.

To find and clear the mine is a very slow process, to find a mine machines are also used as well as dogs and metal detectors

Which type of explosive material is used in mines?
Mainly TNT AND RDX is used
TNT: Trinitrotoluene, a high explosive.
Chemical explosives, nuclear explosives etc. Different types of explosive material is available and used as per the need of army .

Plastic is used in the land mines so it becomes very difficult to find a land mine using metal detector.

156 countries have signed the Ottawa Treaty, as per this treaty signatory countries agreed not to manufacture, stockpile or use anti personnel mines.
China, India, Israel, Pakistan, Russia and the United States have not signed this treaty.

Maoists used the land mines to create fear and panic. To restrict the movement of CRPF Jawans.

Meaning of Stealth Warship –
Stealth warship is a warship which can not be found by the normal radars.

Commissioned – means to put (a ship) into active service.

On April 29, 2010, Indian Defense Minister, A K Antony commissioned “INS Shivalik”


INS Shivalik (F47) Is the first warship designed and built in India by the Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL).

The total cost of Shivalik is Around Rs. 2,300 crore and 60% of the components have been built in India.
It can carry about 257 officers with about 36 Staffs with it. It has length of 143 meters in length and has a large range of about 5 KM.
The weapon-sensor fit of the Shivalik is controlled through a Combat Management System called ‘CMS-17’, designed and developed by the Indian Navy and manufactured by Bharat Electronics (Ghaziabad).
The system allows the seamless integration of the ship’s systems as well as with the weapons and sensors of other Fleet ships, thus enabling the concept of ‘Co-operative Engagement Capability’ (CES).
With her ability to detect and engage surface, air and sub-surface assets of the enemy at extended ranges, this ship represents very significant combat-potential.
INS Shivalik will be armed with the Klub anti-ship and BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. The vessels use 10 gigabit LAN for their network.
Other feature is the commander of chief will get all the information regarding warship in real time in any situation regarding all the working of warship.
The ship’s electric power is provided by four Diesel Alternators, which together produce 4 Mega-Watts of power – enough to light-up a small town.
The power generation and distribution on board is controlled through an ‘Automated Power Management System’ (APMS), which enables the optimal use of electricity at all times.
The two Multi-Role helicopters that would be embarked on Shivalik will provide for enhanced surveillance and attack capability.
One of the most prominent features of INS Shivalik is that it can operate Sea King helicopter.
Shivalik has the speed of 30 knots (or over 55 kmph)

The Shivalik is also equipped with a proven defense against Nuclear, Biological and Chemical attack.
The state-of-the art ‘Total Atmospheric Control System’ (TACS) ensures filtration of the air going into the ship at all times.
In addition, it ensures the complete removal of radioactive, chemical or biological impurities, thereby protecting the crew and ship borne systems even when operating in areas contaminated by nuclear, biological or chemical agents.

What is the meaning of Shivalik class frigates or Project 17 class frigates -?
Project 17 was started Indian Navy for the design and building of stealth frigates in India.
In February 1998 Mazagon Dock Limited (MDU) got letter of intent from Government of India
The Indian Navy formally ordered the first three units in early 1999
INS Shivalik was commissioned on 29/04/2010 and Two more ships, INS Sahyadri and INS Satpura, are also under construction at Mazagon dock.
It’s expected that in November 2010 INS Satpura will be commissioned and INS Sahyadri will be commissioned in April or May 2011.

India will be building total 12 INS Shivalik class frigates.

Pakistan and United States signed a contract for the transfer of the guided-missile frigate USS McInerney.
Pakistan will pay $78 million for 30-year-old frigate


In the year 2008 Pakistan, started process to purchase this frigate, and that time USA agreed to give them.
In September 2008, the US Congress approved selling the frigate to Pakistan with a delivery date of August 2010.
On August 31 this year, Pakistan will take over the USS McInerney at the US Naval station Mayport, Florida, it will be renamed, commissioned as PNS Alamgir, and a comprehensive refurbishment of the ship will be undertaken under the supervision of US Navy, which will be completed by January 2011, which includes anti-submarine capability
Pakistan Navy is planning to purchase such eight Perry-Class frigates.
The Pakistani Navy currently has six frigates, ex-UK Type 21s

Does India Needs to fear that now Pakistan Navy Got the guided-missile frigate USS McInerney?

India does not need to fear from this Purchase of Pakistan Navy.

India already got the INS Shivalik, an Indian Shivalik-class frigate that is equal to this USA frigate. It is expected that this month The Indian Navy will induct its first indigenously built Shivalik class stealth frigate and we got warplanes, which will easily overcome Perry class frigate.
Shivalik is equipped with state-of-the-art defense against nuclear, biological and chemical attacks.


Let us understand what is guided-missile frigate USS McInerney?

This frigate is not required by the USA navy now, so they have sold it.
As India got the Shivalik, it was must for the Pakistan to get frigate USS McInerney
The Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates were designed primarily as anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare guided-missile warships intended to provide open-ocean escort of amphibious warfare ships and merchant ship convoys
These warships are equipped to escort and protect aircraft carrier battle groups, amphibious landing groups, underway replenishment groups, and merchant ship convoys. They can conduct independent operations to perform such tasks as surveillance of illegal drug smugglers, maritime interception operations, and exercises with other nations.
The addition of the Naval Tactical Display System, LAMPS helicopters, and the Tactical Towed Array System (TACTAS) gave these warships a combat capability far beyond the original expectations. They are well suited for the littoral regions and most war-at-sea scenarios.
The FFG 8, 29, 32, and 33 were built as "short-hull" warships but were later modified into "long-hull" warships.

USS McInerney (FFG-8), was laid down on 16 January 1978, launched on 4 November 1978, and commissioned on 15 December 1979.
Therefore, now you got the point the warship is more than 30 years old.
In this period, this warship was used by the America in many successful missions.
McInerney's first major deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean began in November 1982.
In October 1984, McInerney deployed again to the Middle East in the midst of the Iran/Iraq Tanker War.
McInerney performed in every warfare area during the conflict, including convoy escort, mine, anti-air and anti-surface operations. McInerney earned the Navy Unit Commendation, the National Service Defense Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star, the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia) and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) for her wartime service.
On September 13, 2008, McInerney intercepted a 59-foot self-propelled semisubmersible carrying 7 tons of cocaine off the coast of Guatemala. Four Colombian drug smugglers were captured aboard. The cargo had an estimated street value of $187 million.
On 3 April 2010, an MQ-8 Fire Scout from McInerney helped to confiscate 60 kg of cocaine from a speedboat.

1. In the year 1998 BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited was established in India as a joint venture between India's Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroeyenia

2. BrahMos, being a joint venture, the production is being shared by the consortium of industries from India and Russia. The Indian Armed Forces will have the superior fire power and the best cruise missile in the world, by inducting BrahMos.



3. BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft or land, can be launched at any angle and covers a 360 degree radius.

4. Unit cost of Brahmos is US$ 2.73 million

5. Brahmos has the fire and forget principle.

6. India had wanted the BrahMos to be based on a mid range cruise missile, namely P-700 Granit, instead Russia opted for the shorter range sister of the missile, P-800 Oniks, in order to comply with MTCR restrictions, to which Russia is a signatory.

7. It travels at speeds of Mach 2.5 to 2.8 and is the world's fastest cruise missile. It is about three-and-a-half times faster than the U.S.A's subsonic Harpoon cruise missile. At speeds of Mach 2.5 to 2.8, is about three times faster than the American subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

8. The ship-launched and land-based missiles can carry a 200 kg warhead, whereas the aircraft-launched variant (BrahMos A) can carry a 300 kg warhead.

9. The BrahMos is currently being configured for aerial deployment with the Su-30MKI as its carrier.

10. India and Russia intend to make 2,000 BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles over the next ten years through their joint venture company, and nearly 50 percent of them are expected to be exported to friendly countries

11. The Missiles have their roots in Germany as the country developed the first successful Guided missiles V1 and V2.

12. Brahmos is a two stage missile with a solid propellant booster engine as its first stage which brings it to supersonic speed and then gets separated. The liquid ramjet or the second stage then takes the missile closer to 3 Mach speed in cruise phase.

13. The missile is in service with the Indian Navy. Talwar class frigate and Shivalik class frigate are frigates of the Indian Navy that can fire the BrahMos. INS Tabar and INS Trishul are Talwar class vessels armed with supersonic BrahMos while INS Shivalik was the first vessel of the Shivalik class to incorporate the BrahMos.

14. January 10, 2009 it was reported that two Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets have been sent to Russia for a retrofit program that would enable them to launch the aerial version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. The air trials will commence in 2010 with deployment in Indian Air Force by 2012.

15. BrahMos II is expected to be ready by 2013-14 and will arm the Project 15B destroyers of the Indian Navy.

17. On March, 2010 Brahmos was again successfully test fired from a vertical launcher fitted on board moving warship INS Ranvir off the east coast. The missile performed supersonic manoeuvring following the exact flight path and homed in on to the decommissioned target ship INS Meen, and 'The mission met 100 percent success,'

JAISALMER: The Army today successfully test fired the 290-Km range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile at the Pokharan range.
The Indian Army unit successfully launched BrahMos missile and destroyed the pre selected target in the field firing ranges in Rajasthan

The Army has placed orders for three regiments of the supersonic cruise missile and with today's test firing, two of them have been inducted operationally.

Indian army will induct a third regiment in Arunachal Pradesh along the China border.

One regiment of the 290-km range BrahMos consists
Around 65 missiles, five mobile autonomous launchers on Tatra vehicles and
two mobile command posts, among other equipment.

BrahMos is already inducted into the Navy and is deployed on almost all the front line surface warships of the Indian Navy.
