German Government decides to close 17 Nuclear Reactors by 2011 and
close all nuclear power plants by 2022
Learning from the Japan Nuclear disaster Germany has decided to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2022.
Germany on Monday announced plans to become the first major industrialized power to shut down all its nuclear plants.
On Monday Germany's coalition government agreed to shut permanently its 17 nuclear reactors.
Last March Germany closed its 7 nuclear reactors after the Japan nuclear disaster.
Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen said that six reactors will be shut down by 2021, while remaining will be kept open for one year till 2022 to ensure that there would not be any disruption to power supply.
Germany has 17 nuclear reactors on its territory, eight of which are currently off the electricity grid.
Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen said that majority of Germany’s 17 reactors would be offline by the end of 2011.
Mr. Rottgen said: "It's definite. The latest end for the last three nuclear power plants is 2022. There will be no clause for revision.
Currently Germany gets its 23% energy from Nuclear Power plants after 2022 Germany will get 0% power from the Nuclear power plants.
They will keep one or two reactors in a working condition which will help Germany to start production of energy in case of emergency need of power.

In America in 2010 Colorado State passed the first state law create community solar gardens (CSGs).
Last August first community solar garden was activated in El Jebel, Colorado.
The local residents became the collectively owner of Three hundred forty solar panels
Another benefit was that the solar panels were installed on unusable land saving the green and agriculture land.
Colorado law says that by the end of 2013, Colorado utilities will be required to purchase 6 MW of output from community solar gardens (CSGs) that are operating.
The first Renewable Portfolio Standard RPS bill approved in California in 2002 established that electric utility generators had to obtain at least 20 percent of power from renewable resources by 2017 and the good news is that California will achieve the 20 percent goal four years ahead of that schedule.
Last year the California Energy Commission approved almost 4,200 MW of new solar thermal capacity in the state.
Last month California Legislature passed the 33 percent Renewable Portfolio Standard bill. This means that electricity providers are required to obtain one-third of their electricity from renewable resources, including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and small hydroelectric plants.
The new law applies to all electricity retailers in the state, including investor-owned and municipal utilities, as well as independent sellers.
The measure supersedes a previous law that required 20 percent renewable electricity only from investor-owned and independent providers.
Under the new law, which will take effect in July, all providers must meet a 20-percent renewables target by the end of 2013, 25 percent by the end of 2016, and 33 percent by the end of 2020.
Because of Renewable Portfolio Standard RPS program renewable energy generation in California in 2020 will be roughly equal to total current U.S. renewable generation, and supply enough clean energy to power nearly 9 million homes.
In another development The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $2.1 billion loan guarantee to Solar Trust of America for a solar thermal power plant near Blythe, Calif.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said on Tuesday that a fourth reactor at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex was on fire and that more radiation was released.
The government warned 140,000 people nearby to stay indoors to avoid exposure.
Currently in Tokyo radiation level is low.
It is understood the blast was in the Number 2 reactor, where fuel rods had been in danger of overheating. Explosions have already occurred in the Number 1 and Number 3 reactors.
Japan's nuclear safety agency has rated the incidents in the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors as a 4, but has not yet rated the No. 2 reactor.
Japan's nuclear safety agency said the explosion may have damaged a reactor's containment vessel and a radiation leak is feared.
Japan has asked the United States for more equipment to help cool the reactors, after a dangerous drop in cooling water levels that exposed fuel rods in the No. 2 reactor, where Tuesday's blast took place

The assembly is called a fuel rod.
The Zircaloy casing is the first containment. It separates the radioactive fuel from the rest of the world.
These fuel rods are then put together to form larger packages,
And a number of these packages are then put into the reactor.
All these packages together are referred to as “the core”.
The core is then placed in the “pressure vessels”.
The pressure vessel is the second containment.
The entire “hardware” of the nuclear reactor is encased in the third containment which is
Air tight very thick bubble of the strongest steel.
The purpose of the 3rd containment is to keep the core always and permanently cool.

Now a day’s nuclear reactor gets shutdown automatically but even if reactor is turned off then also radioactive fission continue to produce heat.
These radioactive fission products are normally contained in the intact fuel elements and their heat generation decreases with time.
This is reason cooling is very important for reactors.
When reactor is shut down, water pumps not working the core keeps heating until the fuel rods melt.
As they start to melt radioactive materials may get released into the reactor vessel and containment building and environment.
Partial meltdown is where partial or say not complete core is uncovered.
When core is completely uncovered its called as full meltdown.
If adequate cooling is re-established at a partial core melting state, the reactor damage and additional discharge of fuel radioactivity content to the environment could be limited
Thus damage also gets limited.
Potassium Iodine Tablets and Radiation? Are they anti radiation?
It has been reported that Japan has distributed potassium iodine tablets to residents who may have been exposed to radiation from the nuclear power plants
Potassium iodine, or what’s known as KI, “is not an ‘anti-radiation’ drug
According to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Potassium iodide helps protect against thyroid cancer a major risk following radiation exposure by reducing the amount of radioactive iodine absorbed by the thyroid gland
It doesn’t protect other organs, and it doesn’t protect against other radioactive materials.
Dr. David J. Brenner, director of the Columbia University’s Center for Radiological Research said to NY time’s iodine pills were protective, but were “a bit of a myth” because their use is based on the belief that the risk is from inhaling radioactive iodine. Actually, he said, 98 percent of people’s exposure comes from milk and other dairy products.
“The way radioactive iodine gets into human beings is an indirect route,” he said. “It falls to the ground, cows eat it and make milk with radioactive iodine, and you get it from drinking the milk. You get very little from inhaling it. The way to prevent it is just to stop people from drinking the milk.”

The explosion included a large orange flash, which indicates that it was likely the result of a hydrogen detonation.

A volcano in southwestern Japan erupted on Sunday after nearly two weeks of relative silence, sending ash and rocks up to four kilometres (two and a half miles) into the air, a local official said.
Authorities have maintained a volcano warning at a level of three out of five, restricting access to the entire mountain.

The nuclear fuel heats water, the water boils and creates steam, the steam then drives turbines that create the electricity, and the steam is then cooled and condensed back to water, and the water send back to be heated by the nuclear fuel.
The nuclear fuel is uranium oxide with very high melting point of about 3000 °C.
The fuel is made in small brick like cylinders.
Then these are put into a long tube made of Zircaloy with a melting point of 2200 °C, and sealed tight.
The assembly is called a fuel rod.
The Zircaloy casing is the first containment. It separates the radioactive fuel from the rest of the world.
These fuel rods are then put together to form larger packages,
And a number of these packages are then put into the reactor.
All these packages together are referred to as “the core”.
The core is then placed in the “pressure vessels”.
The pressure vessel is the second containment.
The entire “hardware” of the nuclear reactor is encased in the third containment which is

The purpose of the 3rd containment is to keep the core always and permanently cool.
This third containment is then surrounded by the reactor building.

The government declared a state of emergency at the Daiichi unit the first at a nuclear plant in Japan's history.
But hours later, the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the six-reactor Daiichi site in northeastern Japan, announced that it had lost cooling ability at a second reactor there and three units at its nearby Fukushima Daini site.
The power plants, known as Daiichi and Daini and operated by Tokyo Electric Power, experienced critical failures of the cooling systems after the plants were shut down, as they were during the quake.
Daiichi, which is formally known as Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, was designed by General Electric and entered commercial service in 1971. It was probably equipped to function for some hours without emergency diesel generators, said David Lochbaum, who worked at three American reactor complexes that use G.E. technology.
Tokyo Electricity Company, which operates the nuclear plant Fukushima said an explosion was heard in the area of the Fukushima No.1 plant and white smoke could be seen ten minutes later.
The Daiichi and Daini plants are 10 miles apart in Fukushima Prefecture, about 150 miles north of Tokyo and close to the quake's epicenter off the coast.
About 45,000 people were affected by the evacuation order at the Daiichi plant, where those living within a six-mile radius were told to leave. The evacuation of the second plant was for a one-mile radius because "there is no sign that radiation has been emitted outside," an official said.
They said that the levels of radiation were not large enough to threaten the health of people outside the plants, and that the evacuations had been ordered as a precaution.

The official death toll stood at 413, while 784 people were missing and 1,128 injured.

Scientists say the massive earthquake that struck off the coast of Japan ranks as the fifth largest jolt in the world since 1900.
The Associated Press reported that the Cosmo Oil refinery outside of Tokyo was burning out of control with 100-foot flames whipping into the sky.
Bloomberg reported that Sony halted and evacuated six factories in northeastern Japan, while the automaker Toyota and its affiliates closed three factories
The quake hit area will require to be completely rebuilt like roads, rail roads etc.
Japan gets about 30 percent of its electricity from nuclear power plants.
Authorities warned citizens to be prepared for severe power cuts.
More than 1 million households across Japan, mostly in the northeast, still didn't have access to water.
Japan will recover fast because of its advanced technology and efficient working.
Quake and its aftershocks have not really affected the internet’s undersea cables that keep Japan connected to the rest of the world. A small percentage of Japanese internet connections went down but very soon they were restored.
Just thought what will happen in India if Mumabi or any other Indian city faces such natural disaster.
Are we ready for such type of disaster?
It’s sad to say but I do not think India is ready for such disaster.
Hope India does not suffer such type of natural disaster.
Iodine can be used to combat radiation sickness.
So if you are in Japan in that affected area Please keep the Iodine with you.

An explosion at a nuclear power station tore down the walls of one building
It was not clear if the damaged building housed the reactor. Tokyo Power Electric Co., the utility that runs the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant, said four workers were injured but details were not immediately available.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan said 50,000 troops would join rescue and recovery efforts
Shiomi said that even if there was a meltdown, it wouldn't affect humans beyond a six-mile (10-kilometer) radius.
Most of the 51,000 residents living within that radius have been evacuated
The government declared a state of emergency at the Daiichi unit the first at a nuclear plant in Japan's history.
But hours later, the Tokyo Electric Power Co., which operates the six-reactor Daiichi site in northeastern Japan, announced that it had lost cooling ability at a second reactor there and three units at its nearby Fukushima Daini site.
The power plants, known as Daiichi and Daini and operated by Tokyo Electric Power, experienced critical failures of the cooling systems after the plants were shut down, as they were during the quake.
Daiichi, which is formally known as Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, was designed by General Electric and entered commercial service in 1971. It was probably equipped to function for some hours without emergency diesel generators, said David Lochbaum, who worked at three American reactor complexes that use G.E. technology.
Tokyo Electricity Company, which operates the nuclear plant Fukushima said an explosion was heard in the area of the Fukushima No.1 plant and white smoke could be seen ten minutes later.
The Daiichi and Daini plants are 10 miles apart in Fukushima Prefecture, about 150 miles north of Tokyo and close to the quake's epicenter off the coast.
About 45,000 people were affected by the evacuation order at the Daiichi plant, where those living within a six-mile radius were told to leave. The evacuation of the second plant was for a one-mile radius because "there is no sign that radiation has been emitted outside," an official said.
They said that the levels of radiation were not large enough to threaten the health of people outside the plants, and that the evacuations had been ordered as a precaution.
Ryohei Shiomi said that officials were checking whether a meltdown had taken place at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant's Unit 1, which had lost cooling ability
The official death toll stood at 413, while 784 people were missing and 1,128 injured.
In addition, police said between 200 and 300 bodies were found along the coast in Sendai
Earthquake killed more than 1000 people.
More than 45 countries offered all type of help to Japan.
President Barack Obama told Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan the United States would assist in any way.
India also offered help to Japan.

Japan was struck by a magnitude-8.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast triggering a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings.
The quake struck at a depth of six miles (10 kilometers), about 80 miles (125 kilometers) off the eastern coast, the agency said. The area is 240 miles (380 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the U.S. state of Hawaii.

In 1933, a magnitude 8.1 quake in the area killed more than 3,000 people.
The Tokyo stock market extended losses after the quake
The western prefecture of Wakayama ordered 20,000 people to evacuate after further tsunami warnings.
This the biggest natural calamity Japan faced after 1895.
All 5 nuclear reactors are safe.
Bullet train services have been stopped, airports are closed.
No electricity in more than 4 Million Homes because of this earth quake and Tsunami.
Several quakes had hit the same region in recent days, including a 7.3 magnitude one on Wednesday.
