Nandan Nilekani was a Co-Chairman of Infosys Technologies Ltd, of which he is also a co-founder, along with N. R. Narayana Murthy and others.

He has been appointed as the Chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIAI), equivalent of a cabinet rank.

Nandan studied at Bishop Cotton Boys School, Bangalore, and the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

In the year 1981, Nandan and his friends started the company Infosys.


In 2006, Nilekani was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest Indian civilian decoration. 


Nandan co-founded India's National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) as well as the Bangalore Chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE).

He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and serves as the Co-chairman of the IIT Bombay Heritage Fund.

Nandan has been involved in various initiatives of the central and state governments. He was the Chairman of the Government of India’s IT Task Force for power. Nandan has also served as a member of the subcommittee of the Securities and Exchange Board of India that dealt with issues related to Insider Trading, and as a member of the Reserve Bank of India’s Advisory Group on corporate governance.


Nandan has written a book titled as Imagining India: Ideas for the New Century.


Nilekani is married to Rohini Nilekani, an English-language writer and novelist, and they have two children, a daughter Janhavi and a son Nihar, both of whom attend Yale University.
